Gauge labels are useful shorthand, but 12GG or 14GG alone does not specify the complete fabric. Yarn, structure, machine settings and finishing all affect the finished result.
Start with the product context
A finer gauge may support a finer visual stitch, while a coarser gauge can create a more visible structure. Neither is automatically better; select around design, yarn and intended use.
Review the details systematically
Ask the supplier which yarns and structures are feasible on the relevant machine. Request swatches in the proposed yarn and compare drape, opacity, handfeel, weight and recovery.
Record an agreed standard
Approve the garment sample and finished measurements rather than choosing by gauge number alone. Record the confirmed yarn, structure, machine gauge and finishing standard in the production specification.
